Citroen C5 sedanCredited by the company itself as initiating its design renaissance when it debuted in 2001, the previous generation Citroen C5 carries a history and heritage that only a few cars in recent years can claim. With the new model due to go on sale this September, the C5 enters its second generation, and the update brings a new interpretation of the car’s now-classic good looks plus a host of upgraded features from suspension to powertrains.

Positioned below the range-topping C6, the C5 remains a comfortable and roomy sedan, with accordingly elegant features such as an all-new version of the Hydractive 3+ hydropneumatic suspension system. The set-up aims to provide maximum comfort while still delivering solid handling.

The new car is also slightly larger than the model it replaces, stretching 4.78m in length and 1.86m across, and back seat passengers will be happy to hear there’s a generous 2.82m wheelbase.

Powertrain lineup extends to include six-cylinder diesel
The second-generation C5 will be available with a new six-cylinder diesel unit as well the older 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel, which accounts for 85% of the current model’s Australian sales. The new 150kW, 440Nm 2.7-litre twin-turbo V6 will add a new dimension of power and efficiency to the range, and also brings the C5’s powertrain in line with the larger C6.

The existing model's four-cylinder diesel manages a still-respectable 100kW and 320Nm of torque, while the petrol four-cylinder produces 103kW but only 200Nm of torque. The 3.0-litre petrol engine should also return for the new model, generating 155kW and 290Nm of torque, though once again, the new 2.7-litre diesel provides equal or better performance with superior efficiency, so diesel-fuelled powertrains will likely remain the dominant selection among C5 buyers.

New C5 arrives early thanks to smooth production ramp-up
The new run of Citroens is - unusually for the automotive industry - ahead of schedule. The first run had originally been planned to arrive in Australia in October, but early production in Europe means the car will arrive here one month earlier.

Pricing and detailed specifications for the new model are being reserved for the car’s official release, which is scheduled for September 6.
