First unveiled in concept form at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, the
Peugeot 308 Touring model is now on sale in Australia where it joins
the standard 308 hatchback released earlier this year. Adding another
body style in Peugeot’s stylish-yet-affordable 308 line, the Touring
features abundant interior space and reasonable fuel efficiency in a
familiar package.
The 308 has been on sale in Australia since 2003, where it has met with varying success. The car is mostly known for its relatively small size, but large interior space which, according to Peugeot, gives it sharp dynamics and the ability to carry up to seven passengers. In addition to this, it’s one of the most economical seven-seater cars in production today due to its reliance on small diesel engines. Fuel economy figures reach as low as 5.3L/100km.
Bigger, longer and available in three trim levels
Slightly longer and taller than the 308 hatchback, the wheelbase of the wagon has also been increased by 100mm. This results in an extra 751 litres of storage space in the boot, compared to its hatchback counterpart.
The new wagon will be available in the Australia in two trim levels, XS and XSE. The XSE trim level builds on the XS model's standard features with 16 inch alloy wheels, automatic lights and wipers and rear park assist. Interior features include adjustable front bucket seats, removable individual rear seating, and the same dynamic design as the hatchback. A full-length panoramic glass roof offers a bright, airy feel for the cabin.
The biggest attraction for most potential purchasers of a 308 Touring will be its load carrying ability, and in addition to being able to carry seven passengers the back two rows of seats can be folded down completely flat for a large, usable storage space.
Two pairs of engines offer flexible configuration
The 308 Touring will be offered with a choice of four engines - two petrol variants and two diesel variants. The petrol engines include an 88kW 1.6-litre unit and a 103kW 1.6-litre turbo unit, both of which can only be had with a four-speed automatic transmission.
The diesel engines are available with a choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed auto gearboxes, which can be mated with either an 80kW 1.6-litre unit or a 100kW 2.0-litre unit.
In terms of safety, there are a host of systems available, including stability control, traction control, ABS, and electronic brake force distribution. Large ventilated brake discs and sizeable pistons should provide good braking ability, consistent pedal feel and comfortable modulation even under heavy pressure. Passive safety features include a full set of front, side and curtain airbags.
Pricing for the 308 Touring starts at $30,590.
