BMW reveals planned updates for performance M models E-mail

As BMW celebrates its 30th anniversary of producing cars under its legendary M division and posting more than 300,000 sales of the high-performance machines, the company is revamping its M lineup with minor changes to improve performance, efficiency and comfort. Updates for the coming year include a number of styling and mechanical changes and higher levels of standard equipment for the latest M3, M5 and M6 models.

Bigger but lighter cars found to improve crash safety E-mail

plastic_cars_main01.jpgOne of the most effective methods of improving fuel-economy is reducing vehicle weight but the challenge for car designers is how to reduce weight while keeping costs down and safety standards up. Modern safety features such as passenger cells and complex airbag systems add significant weight to a vehicle but a new study claims carmakers can make lighter cars just as safe by removing bulky components and using more aluminum and composite materials.

Proximity sensors & 3D gauges coming to a car near you E-mail

visteon_3d_main01.jpgAutomotive parts suppliers 3M and Visteon recently held an event where they previewed a number of new vehicle interface technologies – 40 new features to be exact – in front of vehicle designers, engineers and employees from three different continents. Two different concept interiors where showcased, one for North America and one for Europe, and while the styling was different on each model the underlying technology remained similar. The focus of the futuristic interiors lay in the center panel, which served as a base of operations for the vehicle.
