These features integrate with the satellite navigation system throughout the Falcon line to offer the latest in traffic and destination information and improve the system’s performance and convenience.

Nissan introduces fuel-saving ‘ECO Pedal’ that resists lead-footed driving E-mail

nissan_eco_pedal_carcentral_560.jpgWhile most carmakers attempt to improve the fuel efficiency of their vehicles by shedding weight, improving aerodynamics or downsizing engines, Nissan is taking a slightly different approach by conditioning motorists to drive more conservatively. Nissan unveiled today a new device called the ECO Pedal that works by activating a counter ‘push-back’ force on the accelerator pedal every time the driver puts his or her foot down.

Toyota unveils Segway-rivalling 'Winglet' E-mail

Toyota Winglet Personal Mobility Robot Toyota has presented its vision of personal mobility of the future with its trio of ‘Winglet’ concepts. Similar in purpose to the (in)famous Segway, the Winglet is designed to allow you move about without actually having to walk and is described as a personal transport assistance robot.

Microsoft to expand automotive offerings with new services E-mail

fiat_blue_me_carcentral_560.jpgMicrosoft today announced that it will expand its automotive business unit with a number of new interface software systems and electronic services expected to be rolled out over the next couple of years. The software giant has already partnered with Ford in the U.S. for its Sync program, and with Fiat for its globally available Blue&Me range of in-car connectivity technology, but the new program aims to get Microsoft more involved in the industry and the future of in-car computer systems and services.

Taking a new angle on the head-up display (HUD) concept, General Motors is working on a prototype windshield system that enhances the driver’s view of the world instead of obstructing it with overlaid information.

In addition to an array of more everyday devices, GM’s European Opel division is currently working on one system that is decidedly more like the stuff of futuristic movies. A forward-looking camera system integrated into the body of the car itself will be able to read street signs and help the driver keep the car within the proper lane.

Smarter traffic lights to solve urban congestion woes E-mail

traffic_signal_main.jpgTechnology has been employed to make driving and cars safer and yet faster, to catch drivers in the act of speeding or running red lights, and even to help us find our way to new places, but so far not much has been done to solve the single biggest problem of driving in urban areas: traffic. An American company, Aldis Corporation, may have something that could change that and greatly reduce the amount of time we spend waiting for the lights to go green.
