Mini unveiling all-electric model at Los Angeles Auto Show E-mail

mini_ev_carcentral_560.jpgMini will unveil an all-electric version of its two-door Cooper hatch at next month's Los Angeles Auto Show, and plans to deliver an initial batch of 500 examples to customers in California towards the end of the year. While the test batch won't be making it to Australian shores, the electric Mini cars, called the 'Mini E', will be instrumental in evaluating the viability of production electric Minis - which could stand a chance of coming to Australia.

Mercedes-Benz S400 Hybrid delivers high-tech image E-mail

While the S400 BlueHYBRID is still billed as the first series-production car to market with a purpose-built lithium-ion battery, it's not as impressive a hybrid system as may have been anticipated.

General Motors reveals production Volt during centenary celebrations E-mail

chevy_volt_official_carcentral_560.jpgAs General Motors celebrates its first century in the car business and steps into the next, it has taken the covers off what could potentially be the model that saves the company and maintains its position as one of the world’s biggest carmakers. The production version of the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, expected to yield up to 5.88L/100km fuel economy plus 64km of emissions-free electric driving, was unveiled today in Detroit.

Official photos reveal production Chevrolet Volt E-mail

chevy_volt_carcentral_main_560.jpgThe Chevrolet Volt is expected to be shown next week as part of General Motors’ centenary celebrations at its Detroit headquarters, but an advance copy of the photos to accompany the release has leaked into the open ahead of schedule. The photos, which clearly depict the car alongside several executives, show the car has taken a significant departure from the concept’s sharp creases, but as expected will share the same basic outline and proportions.

Early look at GM’s upcoming Chevrolet Volt E-mail

general_motors_volt_teasers_carcentral_main.jpg Engineers at General Motors have extended the electric-only range of the Volt by about 10km (up from the previously claimed 64km range) by improving the aerodynamics of the original concept. New teaser images released by the carmaker for the actual production version hint at the smoother shape, though we’ll have to wait until late 2010 for the advanced plug-in hybrid to make its world debut.

Nissan reveals hybrid and electric vehicle plans E-mail

nissan_ev_02_carcentral_560.jpgThe future of hybrid and electric vehicles at Nissan was made clearer today in an announcement that revealed the company’s own hybrid drive system and plans for a future all-electric car. Nissan has been selling a hybrid version of its Altima sedan in several markets for the past two years but the core technology of the vehicle, the petrol-electric hybrid drivetrain, is based on technology borrowed from Toyota. A company executive has revealed that there will be no dedicated hybrid model to use the new powertrain, however.

Lawsuit with battery supplier could delay Mercedes ML450 Hybrid E-mail

mb_ml450_carcentral_560.jpgA law suit filed by Mercedes-Benz against battery supplier Cobasys in the United States last week claims the company failed to deliver batteries as required under their contract. The supply holdup could now push back production or even result in the cancellation of the upcoming hybrid ML450 SUV (concept pictured), even though it’s not due to make its global debut until late in 2009.
