alonso_renault_singapore_main560.jpgThe first ever F1 night race in the history of the sport held a lot of unknowns, throwing up a number of surprises including the first win for Fernando Alonso in more than a year. The Spaniard, who started as far back as 15th on the grid, managed to take advantage of the safety car following a crash by his teammate Nelson Piquet, as well as a major error made by the Ferrari pit crew, which held up Felipe Massa.

Heikki Kovalainen cruises to victory at Hungarian GP E-mail

heiki_mclaren_560_hungary.jpg It was another disappointing day for Ferrari at the Hungarian GP, with lead driver Felipe Massa suffering an engine problem with just three laps to go. This handed the win to McLaren’s Heikki Kovalainen, who recorded his first ever win from 28 starts in his F1 career. McLaren team mate Lewis Hamilton was in second place for most of the race after starting on pole but fell back to fifth at the flag due to a tire puncture.

V8 Supercars plans switch to ethanol fuel for next year’s season E-mail

v8_supercars_eastern_creek_sydney_main_560.jpgSweeping changes to next year’s V8 Supercars series were announced over the weekend and include a decision to switch to 85% ethanol-blended fuel as well as the introduction of a shortened race calendar. V8 Supercars chairman Tony Cochrane confirmed the changes, which he hopes will help in the promotion of alternative fuels and make the series more exciting.

Dominant win for Lewis Hamilton in German GP at Hockenheim E-mail

Lewis Hamilton McLaren Mercedes German GP Lewis Hamilton has secured his second consecutive win and established a four-point lead in the drivers' championship following yesterday’s German GP in Hockenheim. After dominating from the early stages but losing the lead near the end of the race after two safety car interventions, Hamilton proved his prowess by overtaking Felipe Massa and surprise leader Nelson Piquet in the final laps. The win also marks the McLaren team’s first victory at the German GP since 1999.

Lewis Hamilton returns to form at rain-soaked British GP E-mail

Lewis Hamilton McLaren F1 British GP McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton took home top honours at yesterday’s British GP, delivering a decisive drive in the wet conditions and reigniting his world title challenge. Hamilton is now tied with the two Ferrari drivers - Kimi Raikkonen who finished fourth and Felipe Massa who ended 13th - at the top of the championship point’s ladder.

Update: F1 to remain at Albert Park until 2015 E-mail

Melbourne Albert ParkWith the clock running down on the current contract between Formula One and the officials behind the Australian GP, there were tense moments as the Victorian government's refusal to allow a night race held up negotiations. The event's future was thought to be in jeopardy, but today it was announced that F1 will stay at Albert Park through 2015.

V8 Supercars proposal to run at Olympic Park faces opposition E-mail

v8_supercars_eastern_creek_sydney_main_560.jpgAfter a special role as host to the 2008 season’s grand final, Oran Park will be retired from the V8 Supercars calendar, to be replaced at least in the short term with a road circuit around Sydney’s Olympic Park Precinct. The transition marks a move from the oldest track in the country to the newest, while keeping the series in Sydney.

FIA announces F2 series to help groom future F1 talent E-mail

F2 GP2 race carA new low-cost feeder series for the development of future Formula 1 talent is set to be launched by the FIA next year under the guise of Formula 2. The series will be run in direct competition to the current GP2 series operated by Bernie Ecclestone, though young racers around the world are sure to appreciate the expanded opportunity the second event will provide.
