To keep from being forced to produce smaller
vehicles as tastes around the world shift toward greater fuel efficiency,
Mercedes-Benz is working on an array of technologies it hopes to combine in a manner
that allows its large luxury cars to continue into the future while meeting
efficiency and emissions requirements. Local carmakers Holden and Toyota
are also taking similar steps, and as work on such vehicles progresses the
buying public is becoming more aware of the options available.
Hummer could be the next acquisition target in the sights of Indian conglomerate Tata, which recently completed its $2.41 billion purchase of Land Rover and Jaguar from Ford. Tata has previously expressed interest in developing more SUV models, especially for the U.S. market, and with Land Rover already in its hands Hummer could be next.
With rising fuel prices and greater environmental concerns causing a
shift in consumer buying habits towards smaller and more economical
vehicles, Volkswagen’s all-new Tiguan soft-roader is well-timed to take
advantage of the changing trends in the burgeoning
compact SUV market.
Alfa Romeo, known for its sporty and sexy coupes, convertibles and hatchbacks, will build its first-ever SUV as it prepares its return to the United States. Despite a growing trend towards smaller and more efficient vehicles, the market for luxurious SUVs remains strong and has recently seen the introduction of a number of models from Germany’s premium carmakers.
Though hybrid cars have enjoyed a decade of success overseas, they are just beginning to catch a firm foothold here in Australia. The race in the rest of the world is to expand hybrids from primarily small and mid-sized sedans and hatchbacks, to include mid-size and large SUVs. Audi’s announcement that it will build a Q7 hybrid means it’s going to beat its German rivals in this leg of the hybrid race, with the petrol-electric SUV due for initial release in some markets at the end of the year.
Big SUVs
still have a place – albeit a shrinking one – in most car markets, but as the segment
matures more people are seeking out smaller and more car-like vehicles that
still offer the soft-road capability and ample room of an SUV. Audi is among
the many car makers that have recognized this need, and to supplement their
Q-line of vehicles, started by the Q7 and to be followed by the recently
revealed mid-size Q5, the company is also expected to add an even smaller Q3.
Although news surrounding the coming updates to the
luxurious and shapely Range Rover and Range Rover Sport tend to steal the
spotlight from their smaller sibling, the Discovery 3, it too is due for an
update. Pictures captured by spy photographers show that although the exterior
of the Discovery 3 is only getting a small revision, sources reveal the powertrain could be
the major focus of the face lifted model.
Prototypes for Land Rover’s facelifted Range Rover Sport have been
spotted testing at the Nurburgring less than two months after the test
cars were last seen in the UK. The performance SUV already received a
series of major upgrades last year, including the introduction of a
3.6L twin turbo diesel V8 overseas, so for its next update the list of
changes have been kept to a minimum.

A 16 percent increase in sales of four-wheelers and full-size
