The future of automotive design focuses at least as heavily on the interior of our cars – where we spend our time using them – as it does on their exteriors. Design giants 3M and Visteon have taken that principle to heart, and through the use of several study groups and consumer research polls, have developed an array of new technologies that could be coming to production vehicles in the not-so-distant future.
Hyundai will soon be joining the likes of Ford and Fiat by offering a new music and information interface developed jointly with software giant Microsoft.

Cycling advocates are understandably up in arms over the
state of safety for the average cyclist. As cars grow larger and heavier to
satisfy governmental crash safety requirements, they become more hazardous to
pedestrians and cyclists unless special steps are taken to lessen the risk of
injury in the event of a collision. A Dutch cycling group is now pushing for just
such an accommodation - airbags on the external surfaces of cars.
Computer-controlled driving aids are the next frontier of
automobile development for many manufacturers. Some driving aids are already so
commonplace we expect them on even entry-level cars - aids like anti-lock brakes,
traction control, brake assist and electronic stability program are taken for
granted. Cars that keep a safe distance under cruise control, warn of vehicles
in blind spots and even park themselves are already on the street. Some do
their intended duties better than others, and Volkswagen thinks its new Park
Assist Vision self-parking system will be a class-leader.
A new system, called Safety Center, has been developed that
measures driver inputs and determines if they are driving too ‘aggressively’.
The system, developed by US company GreenRoad Technologies, works by measuring
g-forces acting on a car and compares them to pre-determined ’safe’ driving
limits.
