Car companies usually release a number of concepts over the course of a year to showcase their new technologies, future design strategies, and preview new models.
Volkswagen, on the other hand, has taken a step further and showcased vehicle concepts designed for twenty years in the future, a world where technology and motoring go hand in hand and today’s “alternative fuels” are the norm.
The annual NRMA car theft ratings have been announced for 2008 and have been compiled using a host of different statistics including real-world theft figures and the number of anti-theft devices, break-in resistance features and vehicle identity systems installed. An important finding was that by simply adding a $2 self-voiding identification label, car manufacturers could greatly improve theft deterrence.
New reports are emerging that indicate Volkswagen has
internally approved a project to bring its 1-Litre concept car to production by
2010. The tiny, tandem-seated car has received some changes to its basic
powertrain configuration but it is still expected to return fuel consumption in
line with its name - less than 1L/100km. The decision is not yet official, but if the reports prove true, the 1-Litre could reshape the face of the production car industry.
Volkswagen has revealed its intentions to enter the race to
build and market ultra-efficient plug-in hybrid vehicles with today’s unveiling
of the new Golf Twin Drive. The concept car derives its name from its twin-powerplant
design, comprised of an electric motor designed for city driving and an
internal combustion engine for longer trips.
The most popular Volkswagen model in the carmaker’s history, the
Beetle, carried on relatively unchanged for 60 years until 1998, when
the modern but retro-styled ‘New Beetle’ was introduced. Now VW is
working on another update to the line, and latest information
indicates its developers have even more ambitious plans for the
next-generation model, which is expected to arrive sometime in 2011.
Plug-in hybrids
and electric cars are just around the corner, and 2010 is the year the changes
will start arriving in driveways and garages around the world. Volkswagen’s
latest news adds to the anticipation with the announcement of hybrid drive to
be extended to three models and a new electric car.
Volkswagen’s updated Polo hatchback is expected to be launched later this year to replace the aging Mark IV model. It will initially be launched in both three
and five-door hatchback variants, followed next year by an expanded range
to include a new entry-level cabrio, long-wheelbase MPV and possibly an SUV
model called the ‘Cross Polo’.
High fuel prices are pushing buyers around the world toward engines
with fewer cylinders and smaller displacements, and this is leading
carmakers to rethink their powertrain strategies in the hope to take
advantage of the changing trend. One of the biggest movers is
Volkswagen, which has already shown us the potential of high-tech
compact engines with its 125kW Golf GT.
The Golf Plus is Volkswagen’s attempt to broaden its small car range and appeal to buyers seeking something a little more practical than a standard Golf but don’t need a full-size sedan, estate or compact soft-roader. Although the current model is not offered in Australia, given the popularity of the Golf family and increased demand for small vehicles, an updated version, due next year, could be a good opportunity for local VW dealers.
The engineering demands of integrating increasingly complex electrical
designs and power storage units into the next-generation of hybrid cars
are leading some carmakers to form partnerships with firms not
traditionally associated with the automotive industry. In the past
month, both Nissan and Volkswagen have announced joint ventures with
NEC and Sanyo, respectively - companies widely recognised for their
involvement with computers, televisions and other consumer and
commercial electronics.
