The Australian International Motor Show was chosen as the
venue for Cadillac to make its official return, where the luxury arm of General
Motors showed off its CTS sedan and the CTS Coupe Concept. The CTS sedan will
be the first Cadillac to be sold in Australia since the company left in the
1930s.
Cadillac was busy at the recent Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance
motoring event in California, revealing a preview of its new CTS
wagon, which is set to go on sale in the United States during the first half of
next year. The new model is called the Sport Wagon and is based on the
CTS sedan, which is already confirmed for Australian sale at the end of this year.
Cadillac’s
return to Australian soil is rapidly approaching after a 40 year hiatus, and
the once-beloved brand will be arriving with a slew of new models spearheaded
by the recently launched CTS saloon. Due for launch at the end of the year, Cadillac
is hoping to target competitors like BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi with a mix of
both luxury and performance.
As General Motors works to make more of its product line-up
suitable for global sales, it is bringing its Cadillac brand to the forefront
as a luxury marque. Several of its cars are already being hailed as competitive
with the best the Germans have to offer, and GM’s upcoming premium large and medium
platforms should prove
another step in that direction.
Over the last few decades the American auto industry -
including Cadillac - has seen brand image slide steadily lower, both at home
and abroad, while rivals in Germany and Japan have been becoming progressively
stronger. It looks like we may be seeing the pendulum swing back toward
Cadillac, however.
Cadillac’s new CTS sedan is one of the most exciting models the GM luxury division has released in years but according to General Manager Jim Taylor it’s just the start of an onslaught of new models set to revive the brand. Next up will be the new high-performance CTS-V, which is set to give cars like the BMW M5 and Mercedes E63 a run for their money. This will be followed by the Escalade Hybrid SUV, which officials are considering launching in Europe, a new CTS coupe and a range of high-end Platinum models.
With the GT-R’s recently lowered Nordschleife lap time set at 7m 29s, a
drop of nine seconds from its previous 7m 38s lap, General Motors
responded with speculation that the ZR-1 would handily take the
production car lap record at any track in the world. While we have yet
to see the General prove that claim, the latest showing from the
upcoming CTS-V lends some credence to its possibility.
