Holden's iconic Commodore celebrates its 30th anniversary
today, marking the three decades since the first Commodore rolled off the line
at Holden's former assembly line at Pagewood, New South Wales, on October 25th,
1978.
The Australian International Motor Show was chosen as the
venue for Cadillac to make its official return, where the luxury arm of General
Motors showed off its CTS sedan and the CTS Coupe Concept. The CTS sedan will
be the first Cadillac to be sold in Australia since the company left in the
1930s.
The Paris Motor Show is just a few weeks away, but General
Motors yesterday surprised the world by revealing details about its upcoming
Saab concept, expected to debut at the French show, at a media event in
Detroit. The concept is the new 9X Air – a convertible version of the previous
9X BioHybrid concept vehicle from March’s Geneva Motor Show.
As General Motors celebrates its first century in the car
business and steps into the next, it has taken the covers off what could
potentially be the model that saves the company and maintains its position as
one of the world’s biggest carmakers. The production version of the 2011
Chevrolet Volt, expected to yield up to 5.88L/100km fuel economy plus 64km of
emissions-free electric driving, was unveiled today in Detroit.
Holden has announced that it will tackle rising fuel prices head-on by
capping the price of petrol and diesel at just 99 cents per litre for
all private customers. Anyone who buys a new Holden between now and
October 31 will be eligible for the offer, which lasts for up to two
years or 20,000 kilometres.
General Motors has released the first details and images for
its new Chevrolet Cruze, which is scheduled to make its world debut at this
October’s Paris Motor Show. Joining the
recently launched Insignia sedan, the new Cruze has been developed from the
ground-up as a global model and will eventually be sold throughout Europe,
North America and Asia, and could possibly make its way to Australia as a Holden.
Cadillac was busy at the recent Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance
motoring event in California, revealing a preview of its new CTS
wagon, which is set to go on sale in the United States during the first half of
next year. The new model is called the Sport Wagon and is based on the
CTS sedan, which is already confirmed for Australian sale at the end of this year.
Suzuki has released the first image of its all-new Alto
minicar, which the carmaker plans to debut at November’s Paris Motor Show
before a global sales launch early next year. As expected, the production Alto
shares much in common with last year’s A-Star concept.
Ford and General Motors are reportedly in talks about
co-developing new powertrain technologies as the two Detroit giants struggle to
reduce costs in the wake of massive losses this year. According to sources at
both companies, GM first approached Ford over a month ago and since that time
there have been at least three meetings that have taken place between the two.
The ongoing saga of General Motors’ troubled Hummer brand may be coming
to a head. The company has started offering to buy out dealerships in
the U.S., hinting that the rumoured sale of the marque is indeed going
forward. Of several potential buyers for the SUV-centric brand, India's Mahindra & Mahindra is currently the most likely candidate.
