It has been six years since the original Jazz hatchback first came to
Australian shores, and now Honda is following this up with the
introduction of the second-generation model. The small hatch has been a
sales success for Honda, and with renewed styling, new engines and a
growing market for small cars the new Jazz is expected to continue this
trend.
Volkswagen will be revealing the next-generation version of
the Golf GTI - one of the most acclaimed hot hatches on the market - in October,
just in time for the Paris Motor Show. A slight boost in power and a modestly
redesigned appearance are expected to give the GTI a fresh look while leaving
enough intact of the outgoing model for fans to be comfortable with the new
car.
The Holden Barina, based on the Korean-built Daewoo Kalos, was first
released to almost universal criticism for its abysmal scores in crash
tests, as well as its lack of even the most basic of safety features
such as anti-lock brakes. Now, Holden has given its Barina subcompact a
new look and feel, while also upgrading safety to quell concerns.
Kia currently sells the pint-sized Rio and mid-level Cerato in the competitive hatchback market but the Korean company is set to expand its hatch offerings with a brand new five-door based on the Soul concept car, which first appeared in 2006. Kia followed up the original design with a trio of new Soul concept vehicles penned by its new design chief Peter Schreyer – the man behind the iconic Audi TT – and now we have official images and details for the final production model.
Volkswagen has revealed its intentions to enter the race to
build and market ultra-efficient plug-in hybrid vehicles with today’s unveiling
of the new Golf Twin Drive. The concept car derives its name from its twin-powerplant
design, comprised of an electric motor designed for city driving and an
internal combustion engine for longer trips.
Rising fuel prices and the strong dollar are making the case for efficient imported hatchbacks stronger than ever. Alfa Romeo's latest addition to the fold, the Mi.To, is timed perfectly to capitalize on these facts, though its classic good looks and sporting demeanour would likely stand it in good stead regardless.
Ford will kick off the introduction of its facelifted Focus range with
the launch of the fire-breathing XR5 hot-hatch. The new lineup sports a
fresh new look, both inside and out, and is packed with more features
and advanced technologies.
The new Alfa Romeo Mi.To hatchback is already confirmed for Australian
sale by the middle of 2009, but there
could be another more stylish variant also due for a local launch. The
car is the rumoured Mi.To cabrio, previewed here in this latest
computer generated rendering.
Renault’s new sports focused diesel Megane offers a unique option in
the hot-hatch segment but those seeking performance may end up feeling
a little short changed. Peak output is a reasonable 127kW and 360Nm of
torque, however this will only see the car accelerate from 0-100km/h in
an uninspiring 8.3 seconds - not exactly strong selling points for a
sporty hatch.
High fuel prices are pushing buyers around the world toward engines
with fewer cylinders and smaller displacements, and this is leading
carmakers to rethink their powertrain strategies in the hope to take
advantage of the changing trend. One of the biggest movers is
Volkswagen, which has already shown us the potential of high-tech
compact engines with its 125kW Golf GT.
