Land Rover is using this week’s London Motor Show to present its new
ERAD (Electric Rear Axle Drive) diesel-hybrid system in a pair of
Freelander 2 prototypes, which have already begun conducting real world
testing in the UK. The new vehicles showcase a range of fuel-efficiency
enhancing technology that Land Rover will need to help its vehicles
maintain their position near the top of the SUV hierarchy into the 21st
century’s tangle of sky-high fuel prices and strict low emissions
standards.
The long and turbulent history of British sports car maker
TVR is the stuff of automotive legend. In many ways it parallels the tale of
the British car industry as a whole, but in others it is a unique story of the
vision its founder, Trevor Wilkinson, had for a British-built super sports car
over 50 years ago. Previously thought to be on its way to an untimely grave,
the company has revived itself with the announcement that it will recommence production and produce an updated version of its
Sagaris supercar.
Hummer could be the next acquisition target in the sights of Indian conglomerate Tata, which recently completed its $2.41 billion purchase of Land Rover and Jaguar from Ford. Tata has previously expressed interest in developing more SUV models, especially for the U.S. market, and with Land Rover already in its hands Hummer could be next.
Ford today completed the sale of its Jaguar and Land Rover operations
to Tata Motors, the automotive division of Indian mega-conglomerate the
Tata Group and the company behind the world’s cheapest car – the
upcoming Nano minicar. The sale is the culmination of Ford’s decision
last August to explore strategic options for the Jaguar and Land Rover
businesses as the Blue Oval accelerates its turnaround plan and focuses
on its core Ford brand.
Jaguar and Land Rover chief Geoff Polites had a reputation
in the Australian car and racing industries as a man who knew what needed to be done - and
how to get it done with the resources on hand. In his role as Ford of Australia
CEO, he was heavily involved with the V8 Supercars series, and many racers and
teams owe Polites quite a lot. They are planning a gesture this weekend to show their gratitude and to honour his memory.
Although news surrounding the coming updates to the
luxurious and shapely Range Rover and Range Rover Sport tend to steal the
spotlight from their smaller sibling, the Discovery 3, it too is due for an
update. Pictures captured by spy photographers show that although the exterior
of the Discovery 3 is only getting a small revision, sources reveal the powertrain could be
the major focus of the face lifted model.
Prototypes for Land Rover’s facelifted Range Rover Sport have been
spotted testing at the Nurburgring less than two months after the test
cars were last seen in the UK. The performance SUV already received a
series of major upgrades last year, including the introduction of a
3.6L twin turbo diesel V8 overseas, so for its next update the list of
changes have been kept to a minimum.
When the original Land Rover Series 1 made its public debut at a motor show in Amsterdam back in 1948, few would have suspected the brand would go on to become a major player in the international luxury SUV market. Today, Land Rover features a five-model line-up and is selling vehicles at a record level.
The CEO of Jaguar and Land Rover, Geoff Polites, has passed
away at the age of 60. Polites is credited with leading the team that returned
the Jaguar and Land Rover brands back to profitability and his passing comes as
both carmakers are transferred to new owner Tata.
