Holden has announced that it will tackle rising fuel prices head-on by
capping the price of petrol and diesel at just 99 cents per litre for
all private customers. Anyone who buys a new Holden between now and
October 31 will be eligible for the offer, which lasts for up to two
years or 20,000 kilometres.
Mitsubishi has released more details about its second major debut planned for August's Moscow Auto Salon, the all-new Mitsubishi Challenger seven-seater mid-sized SUV. The Mitsubishi Challenger, as it is known in the Australian market, will carry a different name in other markets: it is known as the Montero Sport in South America, the Nativa in Latin America and the Pajero Sport in other non-Spanish speaking markets.
Engineers at General Motors have extended the electric-only range of
the Volt by about 10km (up from the previously claimed 64km range) by
improving the aerodynamics of the original concept. New
teaser images released by the carmaker for the actual production version hint at the smoother shape,

hybrid to make its world debut.
The NRMA released a report today on the future of Australia's oil
dependence, with calls for oil consumption to fall to 50% of their
current levels by 2050. Dubbed the Jamison report, the material was
written and collated by four prominent academics and includes a 12-step
roadmap to achieving the goal of reduced oil consumption.
Poor fuel economy and high conversion costs, even with government
subsidy, are some of the arguments against converting a car to run on liquefied
petroleum gas (LPG), a widely-known alternative fuel found in abundance in
Australia. A new system, called Just Think Green, developed by Australian LPG Warehouse promises to
remedy the fuel economy issue, and says the system is cost-effective thanks to
the lower price of LPG fuel compared to petrol.
Representatives of the Australian Lot Feeders Association (ALFA) have
come forward with concerns that consumers are being fed misinformation
about the fuel economy of ethanol, especially as it compares to petrol.
In a complaint to the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission
(ACCC), ALFA has requested action be taken to make it clear that
ethanol does not usually match petrol’s per-litre efficiency.
The government today released a green paper for its proposed Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS), including in its report a decision to reduce the excise on petrol on a cent-for-cent basis against the carbon emissions trading scheme for the first three years. The overall result will ensure that fuel prices won’t be affected by the new emissions trading scheme, which is set to come into effect in 2010.
Diesel power, stability control and more airbags as standard
equipment are the tools Holden is using to add value and draw more
customers to its Epica midsize sedan. Backing up the new engine and safety
features is a new automatic transmission and fresh styling.
A new casualty of rising fuel prices has emerged in the form of
Shell’s premium V-Power Racing performance fuel, which the oil giant
confirmed today will be phased out throughout Australia.
The most popular Volkswagen model in the carmaker’s history, the
Beetle, carried on relatively unchanged for 60 years until 1998, when
the modern but retro-styled ‘New Beetle’ was introduced. Now VW is
working on another update to the line, and latest information
indicates its developers have even more ambitious plans for the
next-generation model, which is expected to arrive sometime in 2011.
