The first ever F1 night race in the history of the sport held a lot of
unknowns, throwing up a number of surprises including the first win for
Fernando Alonso in more than a year. The Spaniard, who started as far
back as 15th on the grid, managed to take advantage of the safety car
following a crash by his teammate Nelson Piquet, as well as a major
error made by the Ferrari pit crew, which held up Felipe Massa.
Hybrid concepts are among the hottest offerings on the
international concept car scene, which is understandable given current
political and economic trends. Keeping pace with the times, Renault has joined
its French rivals with the announcement today of a new hybrid concept vehicle
set to grace the carmaker’s stands at next month’s Paris Motor Show. The latest
concept is called the Ondelios and is described as a luxury crossover designed
for the environmentally conscious.
Australia’s fiercely competitive hot-hatch segment is about to heat up following the introduction today of the new Renault Sport Megane dCi
175 and Clio 197 models. The two cars are suited to very different
buying tastes but both end up at a nexus of high-performance,
practicality and affordable pricing that has come to define the Renault
Sport range.
Renault bosses have confirmed in the past that there were plans to
bring back the Alpine name, but until now it was thought the carmaker
would use the badge for a new dedicated sports car. Renault’s
next-generation Megane hatch, due towards the end of the year, is
expected to feature a high-performance ‘Alpine’ variant instead. This
is likely to be the first implementation of the name, with other models
currently wearing RS badging to follow.
Felipe Massa took the win at yesterday’s French GP at Magny-Cours after
pole-sitter and race leader Kimi Raikkonnen suffered a broken exhaust
just before the midpoint, though the Finn still managed to hang on for
second place. Toyota driver Jarno Trulli also managed to bring home his
team's first podium spot since 2005, finishing third. Mark Webber hung
on despite a scare at the last corner to finish in sixth.
Renault has launched its latest-generation Laguna range in the
competitive midsize sedan market, bringing European styling, safety and
drivetrain technology in a package priced to be competitive with
similar models from mainstream players Honda, Mazda, and Ford.
Renault’s new sports focused diesel Megane offers a unique option in
the hot-hatch segment but those seeking performance may end up feeling
a little short changed. Peak output is a reasonable 127kW and 360Nm of
torque, however this will only see the car accelerate from 0-100km/h in
an uninspiring 8.3 seconds - not exactly strong selling points for a
sporty hatch.
Due for a official reveal this October at the Paris Motor
Show, the new Laguna Coupe unveiled by Renault today bears a strong resemblance
to the original concept design shown at the Frankfrut Motor Show, making for a very
attractive two-door. There are 8 items tagged with Renault. You can view all our tags in the Tag Cloud
