The Volkswagen Tiguan's name - a portmanteau of 'tiger' and 'iguana' - matches its nature. The Tiguan combines various
elements of the automotive rainbow to come up with a form factor
increasingly embraced by car manufacturers - the crossover SUV.
Volkswagen will be revealing the next-generation version of
the Golf GTI - one of the most acclaimed hot hatches on the market - in October,
just in time for the Paris Motor Show. A slight boost in power and a modestly
redesigned appearance are expected to give the GTI a fresh look while leaving
enough intact of the outgoing model for fans to be comfortable with the new
car.
Volkswagen is reportedly working on an affordable mid-engine
sports car along the lines of the Lotus Elise and now-defunct Toyota MR2, which it plans to
release sometime early next decade. The car is expected to be available in both
coupe and roadster bodystyles, and production could even be outsourced to an
independent vehicle manufacturer such as Karmann.
The Volkswagen Golf is the quintessential German car – practical,
well-engineered and conservatively styled – and the latest version of
the popular hatch has now been officially unveiled. Styling remains similar to the current model,
and there’s definately a close family resemblance to several other VW models
including the recently revealed Scirocco coupe and even the Touareg SUV. The Golf is expected to make its world debut at the Paris Motor Show in October, with its sales debut in Europe planned for later that same month.
The European Commission has finally given permission for Porsche to acquire control of the Volkswagen Group, something the German sports carmaker previously confirmed it would do before the end of the year. Porsche’s supervisory body authorised the purchase of a majority stake in Volkswagen, about $15.73 billion worth of shares, as far back as March. The purchase would take Porsche’s current holding of about 31% beyond the 50% mark, giving it almost total control of the entire Volkswagen Group.
The Volkswagen Group has had a penchant of late for nautically-themed
SUVs. Starting with the Audi Q7 Coastline revealed at the Geneva Motor
Show back in March and then followed up with the Audi Sydney Harbour
Regatta that same month, now the carmaker has revealed the Touareg
North Sails Concept, which will be on display at this week's
Travemünder Woche sailing event in Germany.
A MPV based on the next-generation Polo platform is in the works at Volkswagen, with a planned launch of the new vehicle slated for early next year. Unlike previous generation VW Caddy vans, which were also based on the Polo, the new MPV will be aimed at private buyers and positioned to give VW a strong entry in the new battle to make the most out of small-car platforms as fuel prices rise and carbon trading concerns develop.
Volkswagen has confirmed that a new sedan, slightly bigger than the
Passat, will be manufactured at its future Tennessee plant in the U.S.
and will be on sale in 2010, but contrary to some reports this new car
won’t replace the Passat. Instead, VW will launch its next-generation
Passat, as previewed in these latest renderings, less than 12 months
after the debut of the new sedan. While the Passat will remain a global
model, the new sedan is destined for the North American market only. To
differentiate the two VW will position its next Passat against more
premium marques, adding more luxury and increasing space.
Volkswagen confirmed today that it will build a new U.S. plant in the southern state of Tennessee. The new site, situated in the city of Chattanooga, beat out rival bids from cities in Alabama and Michigan because of its low cost and central location. Production at the site is scheduled to begin in early 2011.
A test mule for Volkswagen’s next-generation Touareg has been captured
undergoing hot-weather and towing tests in California’s Death Valley.
The current model is due for replacement in late 2010, and it’s hoped the new
SUV will alleviate some of the problems with the current version
including seating space, fuel efficiency and market positioning.
