Saab wants future models to be smaller and lighter E-mail

saab_9_x_biohybrid_concept.jpgSaab confirmed at this week’s London Motor Show that it would be focusing on more compact designs for its future models as the most appropriate response to concerns about the environment, fuel prices and urban congestion. The move could be especially good news for Australia, since the current Saab lineup is somewhat limited in its range. Adding a small yet versatile platform to the mix could offer city dwellers another choice in the sport premium segment.

New vehicle sales slowing gradually but SUVs remain strong E-mail

toyota_rav4_main_560.jpgNew data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that sales of new vehicles has been slowing throughout 2008, falling from a peak that occurred in late December of last year. Both seasonally adjusted and raw numbers show an overall decline in new sales, though current levels remain above last year’s figures for the same period. Contrary to popular belief, however, sales of SUVs are up significantly over 2007, despite rising petrol prices.

AAMI survey: cars remain more popular than public transport E-mail

bus_sign_main_330.jpgRising fuel prices may be causing motorists heartache at the pump, but it’s not yet enough to dissuade commuters from driving to their jobs according to a recent survey by AAMI. The insurance firm contacted over 2,500 motorists across the nation to come to the conclusion that the car is still the dominant mode of transport.

The trend hasn’t quite caught on yet here in Australia, but motorists are already aware of the issues - despite having somewhat contrary views on the matter.

Skoda unveiling new Fabia Greenline at Frankfurt E-mail

2008_skoda_fabia_carcentral_560_01.jpgSkoda will debut two new vehicles at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show, the production Fabia Estate (pictured) and a new ultra-efficient Fabia Greenline design study. The Fabia Greenline is a design study that’s intended to highlight Skoda’s push to develop more environmentally-friendly vehicles and showcase new technologies that will eventually make it to the carmaker’s production models.
